About this event

This lecture explores life and home of the former owner of the Chester Beatty’s Hamilton Field Hours, the fascinating yet little known figure of Hamilton Easter Field, the American artist, collector, patron, and critic.

In 1902, after spending a decade studying painting in Paris and traveling widely around Europe, Hamilton Easter Field (1873-1922) returned to his native Brooklyn and over the next twenty years immersed himself in the New York City art scene. Field also remodeled his ancestral residence into a home for his vast and varied book, fine and decorative arts collections, as well as a hub for modern art, where curators and scholars mingled with artists, writers, and musicians.

Anna Jozefacka is an independent scholar whose research spans a wide range of topics within modern art and architecture.
