About this event
Held each year to mark Sir Alfred Chester Beatty’s birthday, this year’s talk, Connoisseurs’ Choice: Chinese Picture-Scrolls, will be delivered by Professor Shane McCausland, Percival David Professor of the History of Art at SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies), University of London.
Today in the digital age, scrolling using a touchscreen on a smartphone may not consciously stir ancient memories. Yet, as this lecture explores, it is the postmodern form of an ancient way of engaging with words and images on a page, one that in East Asia dates to at least the time of the invention of paper in China around 100 CE.
Free, registration required.
