Festival of Voice: Dublin Slang

Saturday, 28 June 2025
About this event
Join a host of balladeers from Dublin traditional singing collective ‘The Night Before Larry Got Stretched’ for an evening of Dublin ‘slang’ songs.
The journey will comprise a series of street ballads from the late 18th century, written (either wholly or partially) in ‘The Newgate Cant’, a prison slang spoken by the criminal underworld of 1770s Dublin. Expect songs on public executions, the stealing of May bushes, and the story of a Dublin’s street criminal’s rise from the dead.
Presented by NCH and supported by IPUT Real Estate Dublin
