About this event
In ‘What Remains’, Ward visits historic mining landscapes such as Avoca in the Wicklow mountains. Using aerial perspective, she documents the effects of the local mining industry on the land. She is interested in the patterns, shapes and traces of what is left behind after mines and quarries are closed. Drawing from photographic material, on-site sketches and found film material, Ward combines different sources to create the basis for her paintings. She also collects and uses pigments from the mine sites such as yellow ochre. The paintings capture the vibrant, unnatural colours that are indicative of a landscape in a state of precarity.
